چکیده

There is a growing body of evidence in support of sleep-dependent memory consolidation and plasticity. However, there are also examples of memory development and plasticity in the absence of sleep, casting doubt on an exclusive sleep-dependent memory hypothesis. As CMLS, Cell. Mol. Life Sci. 61 (2004) 3009–3015 1420-682X/04/243009-07 DOI 10.1007/s00018-004-4351-1 © Birkhäuser Verlag, Basel, 2004 CMLS Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences a result, polarized stances have arisen within the field. Here we reflect on these findings, and explore how they maybe reconcilable in a unified approach to understanding the roles of wake, sleep and specific sleep stages in successful memory processing and brain plasticity.

The role of sleep on children's motor memory consolidation in a motor sequence task

Sleep has been shown to affect the consolidation of motor memory in adults. However, sleep-dependent consolidation is not well-specified in children as like as adults. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of sleep on childrenchr('39')s motor memory consolidation. The participants were 32 voluntary boys aging from 10 to 12 years old from city of Kerman, which had the necess...

The Roles of Cortical Slow Waves in Synaptic Plasticity and Memory Consolidation

Sleep plays important roles in sensory and motor memory consolidation. Sleep oscillations, reflecting neural population activity, involve the reactivation of learning-related neurons and regulate synaptic strength and, thereby affect memory consolidation. Among sleep oscillations, slow waves (0.5-4 Hz) are closely associated with memory consolidation. For example, slow-wave power is regulated i...

Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation in Children.

In the past 30 years, much research has been conducted elucidating the role of sleep in memory and learning; however, the interaction between sleep and cognitive functioning may be unknown in clinical realms. This article serves to provide a primer on sleep-dependent memory consolidation, a process in which memory is stabilized or even enhanced over a period of sleep. Given the increased amount...

Consequences Of Brief Periods Of Sleep Loss On Hippocampus-Dependent Memory And Synaptic Plasticity

Hippocampal cellular and molecular processes critical for memory consolidation are affected by the amount and quality of sleep attained. Questions remain with regard to how sleep enhances memory, what parameters of sleep after learning are optimal for memory consolidation, and what underlying hippocampal molecular players are dysregulated by sleep deprivation to impair memory consolidation and ...

Sleep-Dependent Oscillatory Synchronization: A Role in Fear Memory Consolidation

Sleep plays an important role in memory consolidation through the facilitation of neuronal plasticity; however, how sleep accomplishes this remains to be completely understood. It has previously been demonstrated that neural oscillations are an intrinsic mechanism by which the brain precisely controls neural ensembles. Inter-regional synchronization of these oscillations is also known to facili...
